Pepper Grinder

This project started out as a 3D modeling exercise that turned into a material exploration.

This pepper grinder was an assignment for a digital design methods class. For this assignment, I was tasked with modeling a pepper grinder from the ground up. Every part of this model was handmade, including the grinder mechanism and the spring.  I used imported hardware such as bolts and hex nuts. The body of the pepper grinder is intended to replicate a brutalist style, using compounded elementary shapes and rounded corners.

Once a final model was completed, I explored different materials and textures to bring depth and personality to the pepper grinder. The main design uses a concrete texture to further exaggerate the brutalist style, but other textures include glass, purple injection molded plastic, and a more exotic obsidian material.

To create a set, I then modeled a salt shaker using the same design language. I animated a short video for this project showcasing the assembly and materials that were used to create this salt shaker and pepper grinder set.
